• K9-Kapers Ltd, Aberdeen Dog Training & Dog Walking!

K9-Kapers Limited offer one-to-one dog training, puppy classes and a Ground Work for Grown Ups Class.

We also have a dog walking service offering a midday group walk covering a limited area.

An independent company, K9-Kapers is run by owner Aileen Hodgson. Aileen is a proud member of the The PPG and is passionate about force-free training. As with any profession it is important to keep up to date with the latest research and methods. Keen to offer the best service possible, Aileen spends a great deal of her free time learning and training with established trainers as well as with organisations such as IMDT & PPG.

Methods used for training are always force free and based heavily on positive reinforcement.

K9-Kapers is a fully compliant and insured service, which prides itself on a consistently enthusiastic response from all our clients - two and four legs!

  • One-to-One sessions are available for dog owners who would prefer a more personal service or wish to deal with specific behavioural issues.

During these sessions I visit you at your home and assess any behaviours that are causing you concern and provide positive force-free training solutions.

An initial consultation costs £65.00 in which I spend 1-2 hours with you and your dog discussing your training needs and observing your dog at your home (and sometimes out for a walk depending on your training needs).

Following the consultation you will receive a comprehensive report which outlines the training methods discussed during the session along with helpful recommendations for taking training further.

Further hourly sessions are then charged at £40.00.

  • Our next block of puppy classes beginning 26th September 2017 at South Holburn Parish Church, Holburn Street, Aberdeen is now fully booked.  2018 dates will be available for booking soon.

This is a 8 week course for puppies aged from 13 weeks to 20 weeks old which provides a foundation of learning that you can continue to build on for years to come.

Class numbers are limited to 6 puppies per class to ensure that everyone gets the attention they need.

You'll have fun teaching your puppy basic behaviours like Sit, Lie Down, Stay/Wait, Go To Your Bed and how to drop items from their mouths on request. You will also receive weekly notes and homework to help you and your puppy progress.

Training is something that everyone in the family should enjoy and everyone is welcome*. This is really helpful for when you get home as everyone needs to be on the same page when it comes to training and consistency is key.

Training methods are always force-free and are designed to avoid stress and frustration for your puppy.

The full cost of the course of eight classes is £90.00 and is payable in advance in order to reserve your space. If you interested in attending the next block just BOOK HERE or drop us an email at k9-kapers@outlook.com.

(*Children are very welcome to come along with an adult but do we ask that small children have a dedicated adult to supervise them over and above the adult working with the puppy in the interest of safety).

  • Groundwork for Grown Ups

This course is only run a few times a year based on demand.  If you are interested in attending please complete the booking form and we'll get back to you with more information.

Groundwork for Grown Ups is a 6 week course aimed at dogs aged 1yr+ that have been recently rescued or rehomed. It is also suitable for adult dogs who missed out on puppy class or need to brush up on the basics.

The course is run several times a year and covers training your dog to pay attention to you, respond to basic cues, including sit/stay and down/stay. We will also cover recall, loose leash walking as well as how to deal with common bad habits such as jumping up and chewing. There are also some fun tricks to learn too.

Classes are currently held on a Monday evening at 8.30pm at South Holburn Church, Holburn Street, Aberdeen.

Please note that this class is not suitable for reactive dogs (i.e. dogs that bark, lunge or growl at other dogs or people). I do, however, offer one-to-one training sessions which offer a much more appropriate learning environment for your dog, if there are specific issues such as this, that you wish to address.

The full cost of the course of seven classes is £85.00 and is payable in advance in order to reserve your space. If you interested in attending the next block just BOOK HERE or drop us an email at k9-kapers@outlook.com.

How Would You Like to Trade Your Old Dog Training Equipment for Great Discounts?

We want to swap great discounts on our most popular services FOR your choke, prong or shock collars or any other qualifying pet gear. By participating in “Project Trade” you can earn up to 15% off our most popular services simply by giving us old pet gear* you have laying around. It couldn’t be easier!

    What is “Project Trade”?

Project Trade is the Pet Professional Guild's (PPG) international advocacy program that promotes the use of force-free pet training equipment by asking pet guardians to swap choke, prong and shock collars (and any other devices that are designed to change behavior through pain or fear). Because we want all pets and their guardians to experience the huge advantages and long-lasting effectiveness of force-free training and pet care, we will give you great discounts on our most popular, effective, fun and pain-free training and pet care services in exchange for your old gear.

Effective, humane animal training and pet care methods are the foundation of any animal’s healthy socialization and training and help prevent behavior problems. Since a wide variety of equipment and tools are commonly used when training pets, the pet-owning public needs to be aware of the potential problems and dangers some equipment may pose. Specifically, the use of collars and leads that are intended to apply constriction, pressure, pain or force around a dog’s neck (such as ‘choke chains’ and ‘prong collars’) should be avoided. Distinguished veterinarians and behaviorists worldwide are joining the discussion and calling for the elimination of such devices from the training efforts of both pet owners and professionals.

    What Do the Experts Say?

Respected veterinarian and thyroid expert, Dr. Jean Dodds, recommends against choke or prong collars “as they can easily injure the delicate butterfly-shaped thyroid gland thatsits just below the larynx and in front of the trachea. These collars can also injure the salivary glands and salivary lymph nodes on the side of the face underneath both ears.”

Bestselling author and canine behaviorist, Jean Donaldson, says: "These devices (choke and prong collars), when they work, do so to the degree that they hurt. With the advent of modern methods and tools they are irrelevant.”

According to veterinarian and veterinary behaviorist Dr. Soraya V. Juarbe-Diaz: "Using punishment to stop behaviors is not new. Notice I say ‘stop’ rather than ‘teach’ -- I can stop any behavior, but I am more interested in teaching my students, animal or human, to choose the behavior I want them to perform because they can trust me, because I do not hurt them and they are safe with me, and because the outcome is something they enjoy.”

PPG thus encourages all pet owners and pet professionals to embrace modern, scientifically based, training techniques and tools, especially the latest generation of no-pull harnesses which are free of the risks posed by traditional collars and offer far more benefits. So swap your gear and help create a kinder world for you and your pet!

    Lolly's Owner

    8 August 2015

I recently completed a dog training class with my wee Yorkshire terrier, Lolly which was run by Aileen. I can't recommend it highly enough! We learned so much and there was plenty of one-to-one time as well to ask for extra advice. Was such good fun and met some lovely other people with their dogs too.

    Koda's Owner

    11 June 2016

Massive difference in behaviour of all pooches at start of classes versus end. Huge improvement for Koda and it's reassuring to know Aileen does 1-2-1 training for refreshers going forward.

    Jasper & Bella's Owner

    31st Jan 2016

Aileen is excellent and my pups just loved her. Aileen is very professional and looked after my two rascals very well. I recently moved to Edinburgh with my dogs and I'm just gutted I can't take her with me.

    Ozzy's Owner

    30th Nov 2015

My only regret is that it took me so long to find Aileen. Ozzy NOW has a dog walker/human friend who really cares for dogs ! He cannot contain his excitement when he sees Aileen's van. Ozzy & I both benefit from having Aileen in our lives . I totally trust Aileen to care of Ozzy and at the end of each walk, I have a tired, contented dog
